May: Maya, Earth & New Life

From our spiritual director, Lenza Smith

The month of May was named in honor of the Greek goddess Maya. She was a guardian of nature and growing plants. She was the daughter of Atlas. And she was the mother of Hermes. Maya is also known as the goddess of the earth. And it’s no surprise that the springtime month bears her name. Not only was she an earth goddess and a nurturer, a mother, a nurse and a grandmother of magic, she was also a midwife, bringing new life into the world.

Affirmative Prayer

There is one presence, one living power moving through all creation, sustaining everyone in our community and in the world, and wisdom and love, this presence abides in us and as every person. It is the strength of our community and the light that always guides us. And so we affirm together for ourselves and for the world. This loving force is within us. It goes before us, preparing the way. It walks beside us and rises within us, giving us courage, clarity and peace.

May this presence be felt in every heart, across every boundary, bringing healing where there is pain, unity where there’s division, and wisdom where there is uncertainty. We rest in this loving life force and allow it to move in and through us as peace, joy and action. And we’re grateful. And I say thanks. And so it is.
